Hello and thanks for taking the time to read my Now page. It’s great to have you here!
If you’re wondering what this page is about, think of it as a way to learn a little about what I’m thinking, reading, doing, and sharing around the current time. The difference between a Now page and an About page is primarily time. Now is now whereas the About page is an introduction to who I am, what I work on, and why.
Expect the content below to change over time. And if you’re ever curious or want to chat, you can always get in touch with me via the contact form.
Learning something new is uncomfortable. And it should be. We don’t know how to do something we’ve never done. Yet the older we get, the harder it is to lean into that discomfort. We often have to consciously tell ourselves that it’s ok to feel this discomfort, there is no lion waiting to pounce on us, and discomfort is a part of learning.
How do you teach someone to be more ambitious? Can you? Is it teachable? And more importantly, is it learnable?
One of the things I’m really enjoying at the moment is watching how people listen. I watch without judgment - I watch to notice and learn how that person listens. It reveals a lot about where they are at in that moment.
Noise
Emotion
Calm
Processing
Distraction
Overwhelm
Joy
...just some of the things I’ve noticed lately. Sometimes I want to ask about what I’m seeing but I know it would derail a particular conversation.
I was at an event last week where three panellists were talking about their lives in the law and beyond.
One of them said something that I have long felt, lived, and believed, but the phrasing made it feel new and refreshing: “People hear once they’ve been heard.”
If you’re trying to communicate and effect change, especially within a workplace or team setting, there is so much noise going on while you’re delivering those messages of change.
Taking the time to hear someone first creates a space of safety, mindfulness, and presence that might feel strange the first time you try it but will pay off in the long run.
I’m finally (it’s been years in the making) starting Karl Ove Knausgard’s series, My Struggle. One of my closest friends recommended it years ago. His first book has been on my bookshelf for a long time. I just recently purchased books 2 and 3. Weirdly, I’ve never felt ready to read his work..it’s felt too deep, too much, too big for a long time.
But now, here I am. It’s started.
