Ask what I do, and I still catch myself about to say musician. I became a lawyer while working as a marketer, and I've stayed in advisory ever since.
Starting out
My original dream was to own a record label. Streaming upended the industry overnight, so I stuck with what worked: managing artists and producing classical music events. What I learnt stayed with me as I have moved through my career and into different teams.
Before multidisciplinary had a name
Music led me to a startup founded by classical musicians that built video-streaming tech years before streaming went mainstream. What fascinated me was the people. Musicians turned developers, producers, salespeople, unbothered by disciplinary lines.
Research in practice
As a Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Legal Innovation, I studied multidisciplinary teams in the legal profession. I continue that work through my podcast, This Multidisciplinary Life, and an in-progress book. In August, I live and breathe multidisciplinary life every day. The biggest opportunities rarely sit inside one discipline. They sit within the gaps. Between different disciplines, as we better understand each other and find the magic.
